PIA Groundbreaking and New Name/Logo Unveiled
Peoria, IL — The Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria (MAAP) held a groundbreaking ceremony today at the site of its new $65 million passenger terminal facility. In conjunction with the groundbreaking the airport also announced its new name and logo. The airport will now be referred to as the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport.
Over 350 people were in attendance to hear remarks from Congressman Ray LaHood; H.Ross Perot, Chairman Emeritus of Perot Systems Corporation, Inc.; State Senators David Koehler and Dale Risinger; State Representatives David Leitch and Aaron Schock.
“Today, we embark on a new era of development. A new name, a new look, a new brand and a tribute to an American hero — this is an historical day for the future of our airport and economic development for Central Illinois,” stated Ken Spirito, MAAP Director of Airports.
The original terminal building was constructed in the 1950’s. The new state of the art facility will be approximately 125,000 sq. ft. with eleven gates and be able to service well over 2,000,000 passengers annually. Construction of the new terminal building will take approximately two years and should be complete by late 2010.
The MAAP unanimously agreed to honor General Wayne A. Downing by naming the airport in his memory. The new terminal building will feature informational displays sharing General Downing’s accomplishments throughout his life.
The General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport currently provides service to nine destinations on five airlines (American Eagle to Chicago and Dallas/Ft. Worth, Delta/ASA to Atlanta, Northwest Airlink to Minneapolis and Detroit, United Express to Chicago and Denver and Allegiant Air to Las Vegas, Tampa/St. Pete and Phoenix/Mesa).
