March busiest month on record at PIA
Apr 13, 2017
PEORIA, IL -- March was the busiest month on record at the Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport, continuing a streak of record months in 2017.
A record 61,199 passengers traveled through Peoria's airport last month, breaking previous March records, but also just surpassing July 2015's record high of 61,156 passengers.
"We're very pleased to see this streak continue," said Gene Olson, Director of Airports for the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria. "Still, traditionally, March is one of our busier months due to Spring Break travel."
Year-to-date, 2017 is outpacing 2016 by 8,250 passengers or 5.5 percent. In addition to setting passenger records every month so far in 2017, total freight through PIA's cargo operations is also up 55 percent over this time last year.
"We are having a very good year so far, and we have high hopes that it continues," Olson said. "Next month we'll add our sixth destination on Allegiant -- more than any other Central Illinois airport -- with service to Destin, Florida. We're also seeing our travelers embrace our new flights to Charlotte as a way to connect to the East Coast."
In November, American Airlines added twice daily, nonstop flights to Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT), giving travelers direct access to six major hubs, including four of the five most connected airports in the world from Peoria.
In February, American Airlines further invested in PIA by adding larger 76-seat passenger jets with first class service to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
"We're very proud that Peoria has more nonstop destinations than any other Illinois airport outside of Chicago," Olson said. "With such great connections and convenience, we hope this upward trend continues for us throughout 2017."
