Rickey Event Rededication
The Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria invites the media to join us at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport for an important event.
WHAT: George Rickey Sculpture, Two Open Rectangles Excentric Variation VI, Square Section (1976), Rededication and Ribbon Cutting with remarks from Director of Airports Gene Olson and Peoria RiverFront Museum Bill Conger.
WHEN: Thursday, October 12, 2023, 10:00 am
WHERE: General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport, Main Terminal ENTRANCE.
WHY: The Sculpture was originally dedicated at the airport in 1978, with October 8, marking its 45th Anniversary. Once the new terminal was built, the piece took up residence inside. But after 11+ years of passersby, we didn’t feel the indoors was right for the piece that was originally intended to move with natural air currents and decided to move it outside where all could enjoy it and wanted it to become focal point it was meant to be! With support from the Peoria RiverFront Museum and the Kottemann Family, we have moved, relandscaped and will rededicate this important piece and plan to continue to further promote its importance by working with the George Rickey Foundation and Peoria Art Community.
Beginning April 14, 2025, construction traffic will begin on Phase 1 of the new Air Traffic Control Tower.
Construction will take place for 1 year, immediately followed by Phase 2, which will take an additional year.
For the duration of the project, the main terminal drive will be reduced to one lane between the Old Tower and the merge to Dirksen Parkway. In this section of roadway, outbound traffic will use the left lane, and construction traffic will use the right lane. This is to allow consturction traffic access to the work site (as shown in the map below).
Safe Travels and Thank You for flying PIA!
