PIA celebrates 20 years of Allegiant flights
Peoria, IL – Allegiant Airlines started service at General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport (PIA) in March 2004, with 5x weekly service to Las Vegas.
“We are proud of our long-standing relationship with Allegiant. For 20 years our organizations have worked together to grow air service in the Peoria area and are honored to be one of the first cities Allegiant chose to develop as a core city. The confidence they have in our market is inspiring and we can’t wait to see what the next 20 years brings.”, said Gene Olson, Director of Airports for the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria. “Looking back 20 years, the PIA Board and management from 2004 are to be congratulated for their foresight and vision to recruit and assist Allegiant in getting started, seeing today how their decisions have benefitted the community.”, Olson said.
Over 20 years, Allegiant has grown to 20 weekly flights to 10 destinations. They originally made up 13% of PIA’s airline passenger market share and now are at about 49%. PIA is also rare in Allegiant’s system since they have approximately 40+ direct company employees, when most of their stations are outsourced to a contractor.
Since March of 2004 there have been more than 3.3 million Allegiant passengers, in and out of PIA!

Beginning April 14, 2025, construction traffic will begin on Phase 1 of the new Air Traffic Control Tower.
Construction will take place for 1 year, immediately followed by Phase 2, which will take an additional year.
For the duration of the project, the main terminal drive will be reduced to one lane between the Old Tower and the merge to Dirksen Parkway. In this section of roadway, outbound traffic will use the left lane, and construction traffic will use the right lane. This is to allow consturction traffic access to the work site (as shown in the map below).
Safe Travels and Thank You for flying PIA!
